Applying for a home loan

When purchasing a home, applying for a loan is stressful for a lot of people, but it doesn't have to be. Being familiar with various lenders in the Albany area has helped me recognize a lot of the things that will make the process of applying for a loan a snap.

1 – Organize a list of questions regarding your loan program

Make sure you have a list of questions with you if you don't perfectly comprehend the ins and outs of the various programs. I or one of my trusted lenders will be able to assist you with understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each program, because it's hard to know the differences between fixed and adjustable rate mortgages.

2 – Decide when you want to lock

When you lock in a rate, your mortgage lender is guaranteed to commit to the interest rates for the loan – usually at the time the loan application is submitted. By floating the rate, you can lock the rate anytime between the day you apply for your loan and issuance of closing documents. Those who prefer to float presume that interest rates will dip in the near future. Click here to see the outlook for the next 90 days of interest rates.

3 – Determine if you want to pay additional points to lower your interest rate

When you opt to pay additional points to lower the rate of your loan, you will pay for them in cash at the time of closing. Every point is 1 percent of the mortgage loan. Click here to use our points calculator. This tool will help you decide if purchasing points is right for you.

4 – Compile your paperwork

Obtaining a loan requires lots of paperwork, so you should spend some time getting your documentation together. Click here to get a feel for normal information that goes on a loan application.
